about

Written and recorded over the last two years, The day has again bruised me is an album that captures both the searing heat of loss, and the expansive wave of love, across its concise seven songs, and a depiction of pursuing healing through gritted teeth. Weaving together folk songs, ambient atmospheres and smoky whispers of electro-acoustics, Hannah McKittrick - together with producer Theo Carbo - has created a series of creative, immersive worlds where emotion is surrounded and supported by textured instrumentation.

Album opener ‘Shells’ paints a portal of abundance, where ease, comfort and effortless beauty doesn’t stop to question itself. ‘Sibling’ - a nostalgically hazy song in that sleepy child-like way - sees Hannah wade through feelings of being on the outside of a relationship, and not knowing how to step into the kind of intimacy she has long-craved. An anthem for introverts needed to be left alone can be heard on ‘Threshold’ and ‘Big Plan’ - written after a particularly disastrous Christmas Eve - explores the importance of timing in healing, and the murky waters that are left when family is involved. ‘Time As Intimacy’ is a nod to Ocean Vuong’s poetry book ‘Night Sky With Exit Wounds’, and the idea that time can be a currency from which to love, or a lens from which to view beauty, formed the basis of where the idea of The day has again bruised me was born. Album closer ‘Perfect Struggler’ came out in one cathartic outpouring, and a highlight of Hannah’s live show; she lets her voice get to its breaking point as the song gathers in angry momentum, which feels both risky and powerful.
